Essential Oils for Headaches

Essential Oils for Headaches

Headaches are the worst. They always show up at the wrong time (of course, there is no right time for headaches), and the pain that ensues can be completely debilitating. I’ve suffered from migraines and severe headaches since I was small and I’ll try just about anything to keep the pain at bay.

For many people, essential oils are an effective, “au naturel” way to treat headaches that can be used to both prevent and relieve pain.

Here are the best essential oils for headaches:

Lavender Essential Oil
If you frequently get headaches at night or while sleeping, Lavender oil is a double-threat thanks to its sleep inducing properties.

Peppermint Essential Oil
The cooling sensation provides physical relief on contact thanks to a heavy concentration of menthol. It’s especially nice dabbed on the temples.

Spearmint Essential Oil
Although Peppermint is the better-known headache-reliever in the mint family, some people prefer the aroma of Spearmint Oil. I say, why not use both?

Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus oil is said to be especially effective against headaches associated with sinus headaches.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
Like Lavender, Roman Chamomile oil is a good oil to use if you are trying to alleviate a headache at night or while trying to sleep.

How to use Essential Oils for Headaches

There are many ways to use essential oils for headaches — applied to the skin; in candles; in diffusers; inhaled from a bottle, tissue, or piece of cotton; put in your bath water; or added to hot or cold compresses. It’s wise to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying them to your skin. Here’s my favorite recipe:

Headache Relief Blend Recipe
This recipe is by no means strict — play around with the amount of each oil, depending on your symptoms and sensory preferences.

  • Blend 5 drops of each oil listed above with carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, sweet almond.)
  • Apply to your temples, behind your ears, and the back of your neck.
  • If you have tension in your neck and/or shoulders, put a few drops of the blend onto a cotton pad and dab it along your shoulders and the sides of your neck.
